Sales For Flat Roof and Building Waterproofing to Grow Significantly in the Coming Years

The market for flat roofing and building waterproofing in Europe declined by 1.1% in the examined countries in the first year of the 2020 pandemic. This year, however, the industry will be able to increase its sales again by 4.2%. However, turnover is growing much more strongly, as a study by Interconnection Consulting shows.

The study examines the development of flat roofing and building waterproofing in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Poland, Romania and the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland). The largest market here is Germany with a sales share of 25.6%, followed by France with 16.0% and Scandinavia (11.4%). In Germany, the market turns over 907 million euros in 2021 and is expected to break the billion euro mark in 2024. France’s industry turnover, as the second largest market, is currently around 556 million euros. The turnover for the entire countries studied is increasing by +18.5 this year, due to the exorbitant price increases for raw materials. This circumstance also leads to the fact that the average turnover growth per year until 2024 is much higher than the average sales growth. For Austria, this value is 10.0% sales growth per year. Italy is growing even more strongly with 15.0% annually until 2024, but Switzerland, Poland and Spain are also achieving average sales growth rates in the double-digit range. “The Italian market has not fully recovered since the Great Recession and since then the size of the market has always been lower than the potential,” says Giacomo Tomada, author of the study, explaining Italy’s predicted catch-up.

Ecological Trend Questions Bitumen Dominance

The call for ecological solutions means that plastic and elastomeric (synthetic rubber) membranes are gaining share, much to the chagrin of bitumen membranes. Bitumen, however, due to the lower material costs, still remains clearly in first place with a sales share of 62.7%, ahead of plastic 30.1% and elastomers with 7.2%. In the individual countries, however, the shares are very different. In Italy the bitumen share is 70% and the elastomer share only 3.4%. In Switzerland, bitumen accounts for 61% and elastomer for 11%. This is also evident in the rest of the DACH region, where the share of plastic and elastomeric membranes reaches a higher level on average than in the other countries. In all countries studied, the share of the renovation sector increases in 2020, 2021 and 2022, with the new construction sector not expected to increase again until 2023. The top companies in Europe are Sika, BMI, Soprema, Nordic Waterproofing, Bauder, MAPEI, Alwitra, Renolit, Technonicol, Danosa, Swisspor, Chova.

The European market for window and façade glass in the non-residential sector is expected to grow in volume by 2.8% in 2018, according to a new study by Interconnection Consulting. Without the fallout from Brexit, the uptrend would be even greater, but will, however, continue over the next few years, with a growth in volume between three and four percent between 2019 and 2021.

Until last year, Great Britain was the largest market for window and façade glass in the non-residential sector, but was surpassed by Germany as a result of Brexit in 2017. Great Britain was the only large European market that experienced a decline in sales, of 3.5%, in 2017. On the other hand, sales grew in Germany by 4.9%, largely due to the uptick in the non-residential sector, which flourished on account of a bull market and the continued low interest rates. Poland is the market that will witness the strongest growth between 2015 and 2021. During this time period, annual average growth is expected to be 5.7%. Spain’s average growth rate is 5.5%. The Nordics are at 3.7%, France at 4.0%, and Italy at 3.1%.

The evolving glass sector, with its tremendous improvements compared to older products, will ensure increased demand. Sales will also be boosted by the fact that “the newer, high-tech glass technologies with double and triple panes will be replacing single-pane units, thereby using two to three times the amount of glass,” explains Ernst Rumpeltes, author of the study. Heat-absorbing glass, with a market share of 81.1%, is still the clear leader among glass types, although its share has been declining due to the growing popularity of combination glass. Windows account for the largest area of application, with a market share of 37.4%, followed by curtain wall systems, with 29.9%. In the future, however, curtain wall systems will gain in market shares at the expense of windows. The market for window and façade glass is very competitive and is essentially divided among a few top companies such as AGC, Saint Gobin, Guardian, Pilkington, and Euroglass.
