Sleeping is always in fashion

Germans spend more and more money for a good night’s sleep. The market for box spring beds is booming, whereas the pillow and blanket market in Germany also generated 889.6 million Euros at the manufacturing level last year, increasing its sales by 4.3% compared to 2016. The pillow and blanket industry will grow at an annual rate of 3.7% by 2020, bringing its volume up to the planned  horizon of nearly one billion Euros, according to a recent study by Interconnection Consulting.

Pillows and blankets are showing gains
The pillow market grew by 1.7% in 2017, representing a total of 12.1 million sold pillows. Sales in this segment have increased by 4.2%. Germans prefer the size of the cushions to be 80 x 80 cm, which accounts for 62.8% of this segment. The variant 40 x 80 cm is in second place with a share of 19.3%. Quilts and blankets also recorded an increase. In total, 9.4 million units were sold in this segment in 2017, with the segment 140 x 200 cm clearly being the highest-selling option, with a share of 57.9% before the size of 180 x 200 with 20.9%. However, the biggest growth potential is recorded by children’s blankets, with a maximum size of 80 x 150 cm. This product group will see annual sales growth of 4.4% by 2020.

Box spring beds are booming

The demand for box spring beds is growing rapidly. The boom of the bed variant originating from the USA caused sales figures to increase by 12.3% last year. By 2020, Interconnection forecasts an annual growth rate of 8.9% in this segment. The market volume of box spring beds in Germany is already 546.6 million Euros, whereas 803,600 box spring beds have been sold. The strongest material segment is made up by textile box spring beds with a market share of 64.5%. The product segment with the highest sales is the 2-part 180 variant with a market share of 61.2%.

Regressive demand for mattresses

The mattress sector, on the other hand, suffered losses. Last year sales in this segment fell by one percentage point. The number of mattresses sold even dropped by 2.6 percent to 7.7 million units. Both spring mattress (-1.6%) and foam mattress (-3.1%) as well as latex mattress (-3.1%) recorded a sharp drop in sales. The product segment with the largest market share is the foam mattress with a market share of 62.6%, followed by the spring mattress. Overall, the market volume last year amounted to € 1.04 billion.

Mail order trade dominates

A market survey conducted by Interconnection (Customer Insight) also examined the buying behavior of customers of pillows, blankets and mattresses. It turns out that even today the most common method of purchase is via shipping. 29.4% of all purchases are processed via Amazon, Otto, Quelle and etc.. In contrast, beds are still purchased at furniture stores in most cases (29.9%). But even here, mail order companies are in the fast lane (24.8%).
