Cooling Ceilings & Chilled Beams in Europe 2020

Thermal Cooling on Ice

The market for chilled ceilings and beam cooling in Europe is set to accelerate its rapid decline in the wake of the Corona crisis in 2021 and lose a further 12.5% of its market volume. This means that by the end of next year the market volume in the markets studied (France, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Netherlands) will have fallen by a total of more than 83 million euros since the outbreak of the pandemic.

In 2020, the market for chilled ceilings and – beams will see a moderate decline of 4.5%. In the area of chilled ceilings, Germany is the largest market with a share of 31.8%, ahead of France with 21%  and followed by Switzerland with 16.5%, which has the largest market volume for chilled ceilings in relation to its population. In total, the market for chilled ceilings in Europe has a volume of 434.5 million euros. In comparison, the chilled beam segment is small and has a total volume of only 73 million euros. It is interesting to note that in this product segment Poland has a market volume more than twice as high as Germany and France, with a turnover of more than 30 million euros. The new construction sector makes up around 70 percent of sales in the chilled ceilings and chilled beams segment, with office buildings being the largest consumers, accounting for more than half (54 and 61 percent respectively). The exception here is Poland, where industry is the largest customer.

Market Not Yet Fully Developed

About one third of the global energy consumption of non-renewable energy is attributed to buildings. Not only the general trend in society, but also EU legislative measures have stimulated the demand for energy-efficient cooling methods for buildings and led at least partially to a substitution of energy-consuming air conditioning systems and to stable growth rates for alternative cooling systems in Europe in recent years. Thermal cooling is an important element in achieving the goal of almost climate-neutral buildings. It not only saves energy costs, but also reduces maintenance costs and increases the lifespan of the appliances, explains Julia Tarasenko, the author of the study. Despite these advantages, the market still seems to be far from mature: “There is still a low awareness from the industry to design innovative cooling products in a customer-friendly way, i.e. to install and use them easily and safely,” Tarasenko states. The biggest players on the European market include Lindner, Interalu, Swegon, Barcol Air, Trox, Zehnder, Flaktgroup, Aquatherm and Emco.
