Moderate Outlook for Textile Rental Services in Western Europe

The market for textile rental services in Western Europe will gain 2.1% in value in 2018. This amounts to an overall volume of EUR 11.7 billion in the nine Western European countries (Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Spain, Italy, and Great Britain). Currency fluctuations have caused the bumpy performance. However, without taking Great Britain into account, the market for textile rental services continues to be a growing market, according to a new study by Interconnection Consulting.

Protective Clothing with Outstanding Prospects

The product group with the best prospects for growth is protective clothing, which is benefitting from a favorable interplay of numerous positive factors including a growing interest in the areas of health and risk avoidance at the workplace. High-visibility and signaling vests; all types of heat, electrostatic, and lightning protection are most in demand. The manufacturers have been able to increase users’ acceptance of protective clothing by creating products that are not only functional, but also comfortable and design oriented, as Laszlo Barla, author of the study, explains. On average, this product group will grow 2.6% annually in the coming years. Workwear is the largest product segment, with a volume of EUR 4.3 billion and also an above-average annual growth rate of 2.5% through 2021.

Tourism Helping the Sector

Hotel and gastronomy is the customer segment with the best prospects for growth because the awareness for textile rental services is a growing trend especially in this area. The robust tourist industry across many regions is at the root of this higher demand in the gastronomy and hotel sector. The market volume in this sector in 2018 is EUR 3.3 billion and the annual average growth rate for the upcoming year’s amounts to 2.5%. The largest customer segment is industry, handcraft, and trade, with a volume of EUR 4.4 billion.

Regional Differences

Workwear is capturing an above-average share (48.2%) especially across the region of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. By comparison, the share for workwear in Great Britain is only 27.6%. In Spain and Italy, on the other hand, the share of linens, at 33.7%, is higher than in any other region, which largely has to do with tourism. By contrast, workwear (standard design) in this region plays a smaller role than in other countries.

Unusually High Increase in Market Concentration

In general, market concentration is soaring due to takeovers and mergers. In 2017, the top 10 had a market share of 50.2%. In 2016, this figure was only 42.1%. Due to its acquisition of Berendsen, Elis, the number one in Europe, is now active in all 28 EU countries. With its purchase of the Spanish market leader Indusal, Elis has also advanced to the number one position in Spain. Austria, too, has seen important changes to the market following the purchase of the bankrupt Wozabal by Salesianer, the number one in Austria. The purchasing price lay between EUR 60 million and EUR 65 million. In addition, CWS-boco from Germany is starting a joint venture with Great Britain’s Initial in order to boost their market weight. CWS-boco is active in 16 European countries, Initial in ten.

High Growth Potential in Eastern Europe for Textile Rental Services

In the three regions of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, the market for textile rental services is growing by 4.7% this year. In the upcoming years, this growth trend is expected to continue. According to a study by Interconnection Consulting, average annual growth through 2021 is expected to be 4.5%.

Industry Expands Services

Compared to the rest of Europe, the Eastern European countries Poland (5.6%), the Czech Republic (3.4%), and Slovakia (3.5%) are showing the highest growth rates. Although this has something to do with the currency rates in Poland and the Czech Republic, it is largely due to an outsourcing trend that has not even come close to reaching its potential in this region. However, performance in Eastern Europe is also being heavily augmented by international players. Salesianer Miettex, for example, opened a new laundry plant in Bratislava. With this move, the company is attempting to become the market leader in Slovakia. Lindström has also started an industrial wipers service in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Bardusch, on the other hand, is currently building a state-of-the-art laundry plant in southeast Poland.

Automotive Sector Source of Boom

Workwear is the largest segment in the three countries analyzed, with a volume of EUR 204.5 million out of an overall market volume of EUR 346.4 million. And at 4.8%, the projected development of this product group is also above average for the upcoming years. The heavy demand for workwear is also related to the strong growth rates of the automotive industry, as Laszlo Barla, author of the study, explains. With more than 200,000 employees, the automotive branch is, in fact, the backbone of the Slovakian economy. Nonetheless, cleanroom textiles, with an average growth rate of 5.4% annually, are growing even stronger than workwear.

Market Concentration Increasing

The market concentration has grown considerably in recent years, also due to the takeover of Berendsen by Elis, which has made Elis, next to Salesianer and Lindström, one of the most important players in Eastern Europe. In 2017, the share of the top 10 companies grew from 36.5% to 51.0%.
