Demand for Air Treatment Products Boosted by Weather and Rising Pollution Awareness

The market for Air Treatment Products in Western Europe recorded a strong  increase in 2019 of 7.9% in terms of value sales reaching EUR 82.8 million. The market is expected to continue to grow during the COVID pandemic as increasing attention is being paid to in-home air quality to reach more than EUR 89 million in 2023.

Germany Remains the Biggest Market for Air Treatment Products

The German market recorded a strong value increase in 2019 of nearly 6%, remaining the strongest market for Air Treatment Products in Europe, followed by the UK market which also recorded a strong value growth of 9% keeping the second position. Both markets continued to grow in 2020 positively influenced by the COVID pandemic which increased the attention to in-home air quality.

Demand for Air Purifiers on the Rise

The market for Air Purifiers recorded a strong increase in 2019 of 9.1% with almost 500,000 units sold. While manufacturers have benefited from efforts to educate consumers about how successful air purifiers can be at capturing all sorts of airborne contaminants, improved technology such as quieter functioning and the ability to schedule operation times have made these appliances appealing to even more consumers. Air purifiers with a cleaning function still hold the strongest position on the market with more than 50% market share in terms of value sales. However hybrid air purifiers with both cleaning and humidifier function are set to see the strongest increase over the forecast period. This segment  reached around 40,000 of units sold in 2019, however the demand for this type of product is constantly increasing. Humidifiers recorded a stable increase in 2019 of 7% reaching around 223,000 of units sold. Italy remains the biggest market for humidifiers in 2020 with a market share of 25.2% in terms of quantity sales, followed by Germany and Poland.

New Product Launches Reshaping Competition

In the relatively fragmented competitive landscape for air treatment products Philips is leading the market for air treatment products in Europe, followed by De’Longhi. Both companies are strengthening their volume share further thanks to the strong position of online sales. The competition is strongly influenced by increasing sales of Xiaomi and new product launches of Dyson which is already recognised as a revolutionary brand within air treatment products.
