Low-Energy Concepts Brighten Future for Daylight Systems

The market for daylight building façades in Europe (Germany, France, Great Britain, the Nordics, Poland, Spain, and the Benelux region) has been enjoying high growth rates. Whereas the market volume for 2014 stood at EUR 101.3 million in the above-mentioned countries, a study by Interconnection Consulting forecasts an increase in volume to EUR 164.2 million by 2020. The 2017 volume was EUR 127.9 million.

Germany Takes the Lead

On account of the Brexit crisis, Great Britain is no longer the number one in the daylight building façade market, a position the country had held for the previous five years. Sales last year were down 8.6% from 2016. A fall-off in British construction turned Germany into the largest market since building façade systems are generally installed only in new developments. The German market for daylight systems reached a sales volume of over EUR 44 million last year, due not only to Germany’s construction boom but also to the growing trend for low-energy solutions.

Benelux Top, Poland Flop

The market value of the daylight building façade industry in the Nordics (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland) is EUR 3.5 million. “The problem in the Nordics is that the dark winter months don’t provide enough daylight,” explains Jan Hudak, author of the study. Should, however, these technical hurdles be overcome, Interconnection forecasts higher growth across this region of Europe as well. Spain also has a market volume of EUR 3.5 million, and here, too, the climate is hampering significant growth. The reason is that most systems are based on reflecting layers, which remain ineffective in hazy, dusty conditions. Poland is the country with the lowest level of development of these systems compared with the other markets in the study. Only very few projects implementing daylight systems were undertaken in the country. However, the study sees high growth potential in Poland, too, with growth rates of over 50% by 2020. The market for daylight systems in the Benelux region is more mature than in other countries. The systems in the Benelux countries have been very well adapted to the region’s climate, leading to a high demand for such systems. The sales volume of 78,400 m2 is only roughly 12% lower than that in France. The top European companies include Schlotterer, Warema, Frener & Reifer, Okalux, HunterDouglas, and Osram.

Daylight Systems Outshine Brexit Shadow

In spite of the uncertainties throughout the entire British economy brought about by Brexit, the market for daylight systems in Great Britain has been benefitting from a favorable legislative climate and changes in consumer taste. According to a study by Interconnection Consulting, these two factors will be behind the jump in market volume in daylight systems from EUR 330 million today to EUR 387 million by 2021.

The number of daylight systems (systems with transparent, window-like elements that let daylight into rooms of a building) sold in 2017 was 194,000 units. The sales volume is expected to rise 1.4% in 2018, the revenue to increase an impressive 4.0%. The renovations sector, with a growth of 4.6%, will account for more of this increase than new construction (3.6%). The most important sales market is industry & logistics, with a share of 74.4%. The share of glass in the daylight systems sector continues to grow and is currently at 51.8%.

Improved Working Conditions

The overall trend towards improved working conditions, alongside a constructive legal framework, has supported the market development. Jan Hudak, author of the study, explains the advantages of this industry: “Daylight systems let you save energy and have a positive effect on your health by letting natural light in.”
