Sales Increase Despite Price Spiral

The European market for mattresses had suffered greatly during the pandemic. In 2021, however, a growth of 7.0% could be achieved again. In 2022, the pre-crisis level is to be exceeded again, as a new study by Interconnection Consulting shows.

It is precisely the collapse of tourism and the associated decline in the hotel business and the interruptions in production due to the lockdown that have severely dampened sales of mattresses in 2020. After all, the hotel industry as a whole accounts for about a quarter of the mattress business, with about 70% of business coming from the residential sector. The resurgence of the industry will now continue beyond 2021. However, the countries analysed showed very different market conditions. For example, the growth of Box Spring beds in the UK, where this bed segment dominates, shows that the growth of innerspring mattresses is already reaching its limits.

Turkey Has the Greatest Growth Potential

Overall, the three largest markets for mattresses are Germany and Turkey with a sales volume of 7.2 million units and France with 5.1 million units. In terms of turnover, the picture is somewhat different. Although here too Germany leads the ranking with 1.5 billion euros, France is second with just under 1.3 billion euros, ahead of the Nordic countries with around 1.1 billion euros. The countries with the greatest growth potential are Turkey with an annual growth rate in volume of 6.6% until 2025, ahead of France and Italy with 5% and Spain with 4.7%.

Price Spiral is Turning

In general, prices increased by 9.5% last year and similar price jumps are expected for 2022. These price jumps are not only due to inflation, but also to the strong trend towards premium products. This is especially true for countries like Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic.

Innerspring Mattresses Most Popular

On the whole, innerspring mattresses are the most popular type of mattress in the countries surveyed. Overall, more than half (52.6%) are sold by this product type. The innerspring type is popular not only because it comes in every price category from budget to premium, but also because it is easily recyclable. Foam mattresses have a market share of 30.8% ahead of latex with 12.7%. However, there are also strong differences in the individual countries. Foam mattresses have a share of 60.4% in the DACH region, while innerspring mattresses have a share of almost 80% in Turkey. The most important players in the European market are, in alphabetical order, Auping, Coco-Mat, Eminflex, Emma, Eurocomfort Group, Frankenstolz, Hilding Anders, Hülsta, Pikolin Grupo, Ravensburger, Tempur, among others.

DACH Mattress Market in the Fast Lane

The market for mattresses in the DACH region grew by 22.6% in value terms in 2021 compared to the year before, more than making up for the corona crisis-related losses of 2020. Sales were also increased by 12.1%, and were thus back above the pre-Corona level, as shown in a study by Interconnection Consulting.

Austria Shows Greatest Growth Potential

In 2020, industry sales fell by almost 10% due to lockdowns and travel restrictions. The travel restrictions mainly hit the hotel sector, which still accounts for around 22% of the mattress market. However, the residential sector is the most important sales segment with 69.5%. After the strong upswing in 2021, growth in the DACH region will slow down somewhat this year to around 3.5%. The German mattress market has a volume of about 1.5 billion euros. Switzerland, with 276 million euros, is ahead of Austria with 217 million euros. Austria is the country with the strongest growth potential. With a projected annual growth rate of 3.8% until 2025, Austria is ahead of Switzerland (2.1%) and Germany (1.6%). One reason for Austria’s stronger growth is its low share in the box spring bed segment, which is a main substitute for mattresses.

Foam Dominates

The strong increase in turnover is not only explained by sales increases, but also due to rising prices. For example, prices in the DACH region rose by an average of 8.6% in 2021 and prices will continue to rise in the future. Overall, the number of mattresses sold in the DACH region in 2021 was 9.5 million units, which is around 1 million more than in 2020. 7.2 million units were sold in Germany, 1.2 million in Switzerland and 1.1 million in Austria. While the innerspring mattress is predominant in most other regions of Europe, the foam mattress dominates in the DACH region, with a share of around 60%. Only then come innerspring mattresses with a share of 29%. Some of the most important suppliers in the DACH region in alphabetical order are: Auping, Coco-Mat, Emma, Eurocomfort Group, Frankenstolz, Hilding Anders, Hulsta, Pikolin Grupo, Ravensburger, Recticel, Scarlett, Tropico.
